Community News

Did you know why the tunnel closed underneath Riggs Rd. for access between Cottonwood and Oakwood?

When Robson started building in Oakwood, they built the tunnel for easy access from Cottonwood to the Oakwood Golf Course. At that time, one membership allowed golfers to use all the courses in Sun Lakes. Robson offered the tunnel to Cottonwood and IronOaks, but we rejected the option due to safety hazards and potential complications regarding maintenance and operation of Riggs Rd. The tunnel belongs to Cottonwood/Palo Verde, and they elected to close it for liability reasons after determining they made a mistake in accepting responsibility for the tunnel.

Intel Tree Update

The fence line area started with 325 trees that the neighbors wanted to keep, per a community survey. As part of the landscaping project on the fence line, Intel removed 177 trees, installed a new irrigation system, and continues to plant 300+ trees. The landscaping is projected to be completed in summer 2024.

Intel will not be removing any trees through at least June due to federally protected bald eagles which have taken up residence in the area. As these are a protected species, Intel is carefully monitoring the eagles and taking precautions to respect their boundaries. Intel asks that people do not approach the birds or the nest on the fence line. If you have questions about the birds, contact Liberty Wildlife Rescue or the Arizona Game and Fish Department.

Intel continues to conduct maintenance of the irrigation system and monitoring of the landscaping.

Java With John
