Feeding Wildlife (Ducks)

For generations, we have enjoyed the pastime of feeding ducks old or stale bread. We think we are doing good, and it can be entertaining for our visiting family and children.

The truth is:

  • It is unhealthy for the ducks, as it's like feeding them “candy” without proper nutrition.
  • When food is abundant, it causes overcrowding - More ducks. More duck eggs and more duck feces.
  • Algae blooms in our lakes due to the feces pollution, leading to fish dying and our lakes deteriorating.
  • Fowl feces carry bacteria which affects walkers with their pets.
  • It can attract pests including rats, mice, and insects.

Allowing ducks and other waterfowl to depend on their natural food sources like acquatic plants, seeds, grasses, and insects is better for all involved.
